Griffiths Civil Build Projects

2 Degrees National Rollout - NZ Wide

Griffiths Civil Build became involved in the 2 Degrees National Rollout of cellphone towers towards the tail-end of Tier 1. This meant we were actively involved in everything from tower upgrades to complete construction of new towers, some of which were located in the most remote and hard to access areas. The locations, extreme weather and ground conditions constantly changed throughout this project. We believe the successful completion of this Rollout is testimony to our project management skills, professional work ethos and establishing a good relationship with all the local contractors who were used.

Tier 1 and 2 / Huawei / Sky Communications

During this project we had extremely challenging conditions to contend with. From 33 degrees one day to snow the next. Access was also a factor with 4x4 being the normal mode of transport and helicopters required on the more remote locations.

Tier 3 / Huawei / Sky Communications / Infratel / Downer

Tier 3 of the 2 Degrees roll out has seen us successfully complete 50 sites in 16 weeks located all over the country.

Project scope

Tier 1 involved the first stage of the project and incorporated the larger main centres with Tier 2 following closely behind.

Coming into the project at the tail end of Tier 1 and covering all of Tier 2 meant we were involved in construction of everything from the complete Greenfield sites (new), right through to small road side, roof top and various locations across the country. This included areas such as Palmerston North, Whanganui, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Ashburton, Mt Hutt, Dunedin and Invercargill to name a few.

Tier 3 has seen over 100 sites built throughout the country. Areas now include; Auckland, New Plymouth, Whangamata, Putaruru, Opotiki, Whakatane, Waikato, Gisborne, Wairoa, Wairarapa, Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs, Canterbury, Timaru and Oamaru.

Complicating factors and solutions

Limited access, steep terrain and isolated locations were all complicating factors to overcome. Many of the jobs required us to first put in access tracks, the use of four wheel drive vehicles, helicopters and cranes to supply materials where trucks could not be used was also necessary.

Ground conditions went from solid rock through to water logged ground. Low water tables and underground services meant the use of casing pile holes, retaining walls and in some extreme cases a close consultation with the engineer was required to find a more suitable solution, sometimes this involved a redesign of the foundations to better suit the conditions.

Extreme weather was also an issue, strong wind, rain, snow and baking hot sun meant the correct protection was key to keeping this project on track.

Working alongside local contractors with a professional approach, good communication and understanding all contributed to the project’s successful completion.

Projects

This section shows examples of some of the most recent and key projects that Griffiths Civil Build have been involved in. It showcases the variety of work that we are capable of and gives details of the individual projects, along with a scope and other relevant details and images.

Repiling, Decking & House Repairs - Grafton Rd

This project involved carrying out repairs to an existing dwelling in Roseneath that had restricted access. Our role was to undertake repair work as identified during a pre-purchase building inspection and engineers report.

Concrete Retaining Wall & Access Road - Homebush Road

This project on Homebush Road in Wellington involved the construction of a substantial precast concrete retaining wall and other works to create an access road for a new multi-lot residential development.

Timber Retaining Wall - Home in Roseneath

This home had an old concrete retaining wall that had failed and was falling over in places. After repairing a broken pipe (causing the soil to become saturated and contributing to the old wall failing) we constructed a new timber retaining wall.

Decks & Verandahs - Aotea College, Porirua

To keep the new music block build on track, Naylor Love Construction approached us to assist with the build. This project included securing foundations for relocated buildings, constructing large deck, access ramps and framing.

Earthquake Strengthening - Royal NZ Police College

A major project and the first of its kind in New Zealand. It was particularly challenging and had to be completed outside of usual office hours so the College could remain open. Limited space, harder than expected rock and ground water had to be overcome to successfully complete the job.

Retaining Walls - Commercial Projects

Griffiths Civil Build have a comprehensive background of successfully completing a wide range of retaining walls. See examples of our work that include an RBI upgrade for Vodafone, a new retaining wall on Paekakariki Hill Road and work in the city for Victoria University,

Telecom NZ Site Builds - North Island

Cell phone tower construction throughout the North Island. The ‘roadside' project in Palmerston North required an onsite traffic management policy, the construction at Avalon needed specialist environmental precautions and Otaki was the first to utilise Telecom's own specific design.

West Wind Farm

Limited access, steep terrain, wet slippery conditions and very high winds were complicating factors. Also the rock was very fractured due to the proximity of the main fault line.

Transpower Tower Foundation Strengthening

This project involved upgrading the foundations on transmission line towers in the upper South Island. We are proud to be associated with the 2007 New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards Supreme Award winner.

Soil Nail Wall - Dowse to Petone

Construction of a retaining wall that included drilling and testing a sacrificial nail for design purposes, drilling and installing production nails, fabrication of nail heads, fixing mesh to the face and applying sprayed concrete.
